Singapore Lantern Festival

There's something surreal, almost ghostly, about a field full of glowing orange tigers.  But here we were, standing on the other side of a low fence, staring into the face of two dozen ferocious felines. This is the Singapore Lantern festival, held under the full moon in the Fall of every year.  In Singapore, the venue is the Chinese Gardens, where a huge lake floats dozens of lanterns in all shapes and colours.

Field of Tigers

Thousands of Singaporeans and tourists flock to the gardens during the week, on hot Singa- pore nights, to see the spectacle.  Many bring moon cakes, Chinese pastries eaten only at this time of the year, to have a picnic under the stars.

It's a regular carnival, with food, lots of children running around, and even the obligatory lion dancers wandering around.  Just enjoy the pictures and pretend you're there...

The crash of cymbals and beat of the drums means the lions are approaching.  Behind them come the celestial prince and princess.

Dozens of lanterns float sanguinely on the lake, creating an atmosphere of peaceful fantasy.  Like Disneyland after six beers.

Under the canopy and over the heads of the crowd, lantern upon lantern lighting up the warm night...

You can catch the Lantern Festival in Singapore in late September or early October. It usually runs for a about 10 days, covering two weekends. Take the MRT to Chinese Gardens and walk in because the traffic and parking is a big problem during this festive season.
