Family Friendly Fare

Let's say you want to have a nice dinner, but with small children or infants, a romantic night out is out of the question. What kind of restaurants can you go to that are friendly to families with children? We selected two restaurants and give a nod to two others.

Tops in our book is Dan Ryan's (American), an American chain of restaurants where a hamburger is really a hamburger, and everything comes in American sizes (i.e. larger than you can comfortably fit in you stomach unless you're Homer Simpson). Of course we enjoy the food because it reminds us of home, and they have one of the best milkshakes you can get anywhere in Singapore. But the service is very friendly and they really take care of you when you have children. This is yet another restaurant where during not so busy hours, the wait staff played with Jeremy so we could eat in peace.

We also like Margarita's (Oaxacan Mexican), which is walking distance from our home (on an empty stomach; on a full stomach, we get a taxi). Good Mexican food is very rare in Singapore, apparently not exactly the most popular food around. But expats love Margarita's as well as Singaporeans who are "in the know". Everything is delicious, although we wouldn't miss out on their fajitas. When we come in with Jeremy, they put us along the wall where we won't be bothered by foot traffic and give him some toys to keep him occupied.

We also recommend Crystal Jade Kitchen (Cantonese Chinese), which reminds me of one of those crazy Hong Kong restaurants where everyone is hanging out, eating good food, and having loud conversation. Any noise from children would be overlooked because the rest of the place is pretty noisy. The food is delicious and the menu is big, so there's something for everyone. The aisles are too narrow to park a stroller but the staff will do their best to put you in an out of the way corner. The service is not fantastic, but you're really here for the food anyway.

Sometimes we go to California Pizza Kitchen, a chain of pizza restaurants that originated back in San Mateo, very close to where we used to live. Another noisy venue where children would not make any extra disturbance. The staff varies, but service is generally above average at either location (Forum at Orchard or Time Square at Millenia Walk).
